The U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas announced on May 1 that a new scam is targeting individuals through text messages claiming to be from the court and referencing a judge, the Kansas District Court, and the Kansas Turnpike Authority.

This issue matters because recipients are being instructed to visit a so-called Court Portal to resolve an alleged traffic matter immediately. The fraudulent texts warn about possible fines and negative impacts on driving privileges and vehicle registration.

According to the court, “The U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas does not send text messages to collect fines or list consequences.” Officials urge anyone who receives such communications by text, email, or phone call to contact the Clerk’s Office with questions.

Additional security information about these types of scams is available from the Kansas Turnpike Authority.

As scams like this continue to appear in various forms, authorities encourage vigilance when receiving unsolicited requests for payment or personal information.
