The United States District Court for the District of Kansas announced on Mar. 27 that Judge Mitchell L. Herren has been selected as the next chief bankruptcy judge, effective June 15, 2026.

This appointment marks a transition in leadership for the bankruptcy court. The role of chief bankruptcy judge is significant in overseeing cases and guiding administrative matters within the district.

The court expressed appreciation to Judge Dale L. Somers, who has served as chief bankruptcy judge since 2018. “The court extends our sincere appreciation to Judge Dale L. Somers for his dedicated service and leadership as chief bankruptcy judge since 2018,” the announcement said. “The court is very grateful for Judge Somers’ contributions to the Kansas federal courts.” The statement also noted that Judge Somers will continue serving as a bankruptcy judge, presiding over cases in Topeka, Kansas City, and Wichita.

“Please join us in welcoming Judge Herren as the next chief bankruptcy judge for the District of Kansas and thanking Judge Somers for his exemplary service,” the announcement said.

Leadership changes such as this can affect how cases are managed and may bring new perspectives to judicial administration within the district.
