A Kansas tax preparer has been sentenced to 36 months in prison for filing false income tax returns, resulting in a tax loss exceeding $1.5 million to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Court documents reveal that Hophine Bwosinde, 61, from Lenexa, admitted guilt to one count of aiding and assisting in fraud and false statements.
Between 2018 and 2022, Bwosinde operated his tax preparation business to submit fraudulent tax returns for clients. He either exaggerated legitimate business expenses or reported losses related to non-existent businesses. Additionally, Bwosinde falsely declared negative income on clients’ returns. Consequently, their incomes were substantially underreported to the IRS, which either decreased the taxes owed by clients or resulted in unwarranted refunds.
The case was investigated by IRS Criminal Investigation.
The prosecution was led by former Trial Attorney Erika V. Suhr of the Tax Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Huschka for the District of Kansas.
