The U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas announced on May 1 that a new scam is targeting individuals through text messages claiming to be from the court or related authorities.
This warning matters because it aims to prevent members of the public from falling victim to fraudulent schemes that could result in financial loss or compromised personal information.
According to the court, recipients have reported receiving texts instructing them to visit a supposed Court Portal and resolve a traffic matter immediately. The messages reference a judge, Kansas District Court, and the Kansas Turnpike Authority, and list possible consequences such as fines and impacts on driving privileges or vehicle registration.
“The U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas does not send text messages to collect fines or list consequences,” said court officials in their statement. They advise anyone with questions about suspicious texts, emails, or calls to contact the Clerk’s Office directly.
Additional security information is available from the Kansas Turnpike Authority regarding traffic scams. The court also provides further details online for those seeking more information about federal court-related scams.
As scams continue to evolve in method and frequency, officials urge vigilance when responding to unsolicited communications referencing legal matters.
